If you feel as if there is a pebble in your shoe or a fold in your sock but nothing is actually there, you may have Morton’s neuroma. Morton’s neuroma is a disorder that causes pain on the ball of your foot, and especially between the third toe and fourth toe.
If you are experiencing symptoms and think this may be the cause, contact Elizabeth E. Auger, DPM today. Dr. Auger is a trusted foot doctor serving clients in and around Salt Lake City. She has the experience necessary to diagnose and treat Morton’s neuroma and other conditions that impact foot health.
Morton’s neuroma occurs due to a thickening of the tissue around the nerves. The tissue grows thicker on nerves that lead to the toe. This may occur due to wearing high-heeled shoes. The condition can be very painful and can impact mobility.
Morton’s neuroma can cause burning pain on the ball of the affected foot, in addition to making you feel as if you are standing on a pebble that is not actually there. You may also experience numbness, burning, stinging, or tingling on affected toes. Because of the discomfort, your mobility may be impaired.
Pain in the balls of the feet can be indicative of a number of different medical issues. An experienced foot doctor can conduct an examination to determine if Morton’s neuroma is the cause. If your discomfort results from Morton’s neuroma, your doctor may advise you to switch to different footwear, including footwear with a lower heel or with a wider box for the toe.
If changing to different shoes does not resolve the discomfort, you may need a corticosteroid injection. In some cases, surgery may be needed to fix the thickening of the tissue around the affected nerve.
Dr. Auger provides treatment to patients in Salt Lake City, with three office locations in West Jordan, Millcreek, and Sandy.
