Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis. It is usually age-related and it can result in inflammation and injury to the joints. Osteoarthritis can impact any joint, including more than 30 joints that are found in the foot.
Elizabeth E. Auger, DPM provides treatment for patients suffering from foot and ankle osteoarthritis. The services of a skilled foot doctor like Dr. Auger can help you to limit discomfort and enhance mobility so you can continue to enjoy the activities you love in and around Salt Lake City.
Osteoarthritis is also called wear-and-tear arthritis. It is a degenerative condition that happens when cartilage starts to break down due to joint inflammation and joint injury. Osteoarthritis usually comes upon a patient gradually, eventually resulting in lost join function, joint deformities, and limited mobility.
Certain joints of the foot are more likely to be impacted by osteoarthritis than others. The joints most commonly impacted include the joints of the heel bone; the outer mid-foot bone; the inner mid-foot bone; the big toe; and the joint where the shinbone and ankle join.
Osteoarthritis symptoms can include tenderness around the affected joints, as well as joint swelling or stiffness. Over time, your ability to walk or feel pain can be impacted adversely. You may initially feel only minor discomfort or occasional swelling, but the condition generally becomes progressively worse.
Dr. Auger will take a medical history and conduct a physical exam to diagnose osteoarthritis. Testing can include CT scans or an MRI may be necessary. Once you have been diagnosed, there are a wide variety of treatment options depending upon the progression of the disease and the level of impairment caused by the osteoarthritis.
Treatments could include injectible steroids; pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications; arch support; the use of a brace or cane; orthotics; physical therapy; losing weight, and wearing custom shoes. Dr. Auger will work with you to develop a treatment plan that makes sense for your condition and lifestyle.
