If you experience swelling, pain, or stiffness around any of the tendons of the foot or ankle, you could have tendonitis. This condition can impact your mobility and stop you from doing activities you love in and around Salt Lake City. You can get tendonitis treated so you can stop the pain, and you should contact a foot doctor for help right away when you experience pain before the problem gets worse. Elizabeth E. Auger, DPM is here to help.
Tendonitis is a common cause of foot pain that occurs when your tendons become injured, inflamed, or irritated. Overuse and injury are both very common causes of tendonitis. If your foot structure is abnormal or if you have a medical condition like gout or rheumatoid arthritis, you are more likely to develop tendonitis.
Pain in the tendons of the foot or ankle is the most obvious symptom of tendonitis and is usually the first sign of a problem. The pain is usually a localized or sharp pain but can spread as the tendonitis gets worse. When you initially move, you may experience a sharp burst of pain that fades to a dull pain after a few minutes. Swelling and stiffness can also occur, especially if you do not seek treatment when the tendon first becomes inflamed.
Dr. Auger will diagnose the type of tendonitis that you have. You may experience Achilles tendonitis, posterior tibial tendonitis, peroneal tendonitis, extensor tendonitis, or anterior tibial tendonitis, among others. A physical exam and sometimes imaging tests may be necessary to diagnose your condition.
Once diagnosed, treatment options could include rest, ice, compression, elevation, and medication. In some cases, surgery is required to correct foot deformities or repair damage to the tendons.
