Are you experiencing pain and discomfort from what you think are bunions in West Jordan Utah? Well then, the podiatrist you need to see is Elizabeth E. Auger, DPM. She has offered this community a holistic podiatry practice with three locations for over twenty years.
As an athlete herself, Dr. Auger understands the nature of the most common conditions and injuries from participating in the myriad of outdoor activities available in the Salt Lake City environment. Dr. Auger is an advocate for preventative care whenever possible, employing conservative methods unless surgical treatments are absolutely required.
Is your skin outside the joint of your big or little toe turning red from inflammation, and causing pain? Is a bump present or appearing to enlarge? Does this condition not only affect the way your shoes fit (or don’t) but also your mobility.
The bony protrusions which form outside of the joint at the base of your big or little toe are known as bunions. When your big toe pushes against the toe next to it, it forces the joint of the big toe to get larger and eventually protrude. This can also happen with your little toe (pinky).
If you are consistently wearing high heels (for work or entertainment) you’re forcing the crowding of your toes into the front of your shoes. When your choices of shoes are pointed, too tight, or too narrow the chances of bunion growth increase substantially.
Those of you with the condition called rheumatoid arthritis are also more susceptible to bunions. You may, on the other hand, have inherited a tendency to develop bunions due to a structural foot defect.
When your foot rolls inward as you walk or run, this is known as overpronation. This process flattens the arch too much, which may also be the cause of your bunions.
If you’re suffering from bunions in West Jordan Utah, Dr. Elizabeth Auger can help. You’ll be given a full exam, potentially with x-rays, to see if what looks to be a bunion truly is one. This is critical to make sure there is not another underlying reason for the condition of your bump.
When a bunion diagnosis is made, conservative treatment will be tried first to see how much the condition can be improved. This will consist of splinting or taping your foot into its normal position, to reduce the stress on your toe(s). Additionally, injectable or oral pain relief medications can be utilized, which should lessen your pain – as will icing the foot to decrease painful inflammation. Corrective footwear and/or inserts may also be suggested by Dr. Auger, and possibly prescription orthotics if needed.
A severe bunion condition may warrant more aggressive treatment in the form of surgery to make the following corrections:
